Health & Safety Officer
We are looking for an experienced and suitably qualified Occupational Health & Safety Officer to join our steel/metal manufacturing environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting and maintaining a safe and compliant workplace by implementing occupational health and safety standards, conducting inspections and risk assessments, driving corrective actions, and promoting a strong safety culture across the organisation.
This role requires a hands-on safety professional who is comfortable working in an industrial/manufacturing environment and has a strong understanding of South African occupational health and safety legislation.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Implement, maintain and monitor Occupational Health & Safety policies, procedures and systems.
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable South African regulations and standards.
- Conduct regular workplace safety inspections, audits and risk assessments.
- Identify hazards and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative measures.
- Monitor and follow up on corrective actions to ensure timely close-out.
- Investigate workplace incidents, injuries and near misses and prepare detailed reports.
- Assist with the implementation and monitoring of emergency preparedness and response procedures.
- Coordinate and facilitate health and safety training, inductions and toolbox talks.
- Promote safety awareness and a positive safety culture among employees and contractors.
- Maintain accurate OHS records, registers, reports and documentation.
- Assist with the preparation for internal and external safety audits and inspections.
- Monitor compliance with safety requirements for machinery, equipment, PPE and work areas.
- Liaise with management, employees, contractors and relevant external stakeholders on OHS matters.
- Provide guidance and advice to management and employees on occupational health and safety requirements.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of an ISO 45001-aligned Safety Management System.
- Compile and submit relevant OHS reports and safety statistics to management.
- Stay up to date with changes in OHS legislation, standards and industry best practice.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- National Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health or a related field.
- SAMTRAC, NEBOSH or NOSA qualification will be advantageous.
- Additional OHS-related certifications will be considered an advantage.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in an Occupational Health & Safety role.
- Experience within a steel/metal manufacturing, construction, engineering or industrial environment is essential.
- Strong practical knowledge and understanding of the South African Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and applicable regulations.
- Experience conducting risk assessments, inspections, incident investigations and safety audits.
- Experience in safety training and employee awareness programmes.
- Experience working with Safety Management Systems; ISO 45001 experience is preferred.
- Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
- Experience with SAP and/or SYSPRO will be advantageous.
- Experience using Safety Management Systems and digital safety reporting platforms.
- Strong reporting and documentation skills.
